Clopay roller replacement in San Francisco typically runs $130 to $260 installed, parts and labor included, and we stock Clopay-compatible rollers on our trucks for same-day service in most cases. Most owners discover the problem the same way: a grinding or rumbling sound as the door moves, a door that shudders partway up, or a visible slant when the door is halfway open. The roller, the small wheel that rides inside the vertical track on each side of the door, wears out faster than almost any other Clopay component. When one fails, the door keeps working, but it works harder, and every cycle puts more strain on the opener motor, the hinges, and the track itself. We replace the roller before it takes something more expensive down with it.
We’re Doyle Garage Doors San Francisco, an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with Clopay, but we work on their doors every week, from the Sunset to Noe Valley, and we carry the roller sizes that Clopay doors actually use.
Which Clopay Models This Applies To
Clopay builds residential doors across several lines: the Classic, Gallery, Coachman, Reserve, and Canyon Ridge series, plus older models no longer in production. All of them use the same basic roller design, which is good news, but there are two compatibility details that trip people up.
First, the roller stem diameter. Clopay uses two stem sizes: 7/16-inch and 11/16-inch. Measure, or let us measure. Installing a roller with the wrong stem means the door rattles inside the hinge and can bind under load. Second, the wheel itself. Older Clopay doors from before roughly 2005 shipped with steel rollers that have no ball bearings. They grind. They seize. They chew up track. The factory replacement today is a nylon-wheel roller with sealed ball bearings, and it is quieter and lasts longer. If your door was installed in the early 2000s and still has original rollers, you are not replacing like for like. You are upgrading past a design Clopay stopped using for good reason.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: Clopay-branded rollers are fine, but the markups in San Francisco make them hard to justify. We stock quality sealed-bearing nylon rollers in both stem sizes and in 2-inch and 3-inch wheel diameters. When a customer wants OEM specifically, we order it. When they want the door quiet and reliable, we install what we carry.

Signs Your Clopay Roller Replacement Is Failing
- Grinding or rumbling when the door moves. This is the classic worn-roller symptom. The ball bearings inside the wheel have worn or seized, so the wheel drags instead of spins. The sound travels through the track and into the garage wall.
- The door shudders or jerks as it travels. A flat-spotted or seized roller does not roll smoothly. It sticks, releases, sticks again. You will feel it in the door and hear it in the opener motor working harder than it should.
- Visible slant or uneven gap when the door is partway up. When one roller fails, that corner of the door lags. The door sits crooked in the opening. Left alone, this twists the hinges and pulls the track out of alignment.
- Metal-on-metal squealing from the track area. If the roller wheel has worn through to the bearing hub, you get a sharp metallic squeal. It often comes and goes with temperature. In San Francisco’s fog and damp, untreated steel rollers corrode and this gets worse.
- One roller not touching the track, or sitting at an angle. Stand to the side and watch the rollers as the door moves. If one is not spinning at all, or spins at an angle to the track, the stem or the wheel is worn. That roller is done.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For Clopay roller replacement in San Francisco, plan on $130 to $260 installed. That covers all rollers on both sides of the door, the labor to swap them, and a quick track inspection while we’re there. If we replace one roller, we replace all of them. They wear at roughly the same rate, and doing half the job means you call us again in six months.
The range reflects two things. First, the roller grade: standard sealed-bearing nylon rollers sit at the lower end, upgraded 11-ball-bearing nylon rollers with thicker stems at the higher end. Second, the door: a single-car door uses fewer rollers than a double-car, so the total is lower. The price includes the parts, the labor, and the written quote before anything gets unbolted. Every repair we do in San Francisco carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if the roller fails within 365 days from the date of repair, we come back and make it right at no charge, no argument required.
This job does not get a same-day emergency dispatch guarantee in the way a snapped cable does. A worn roller is urgent but rarely an emergency. If your door is off the track or jammed open, that is a different call and we treat it as one. For roller replacement, we schedule quickly, usually same week, and always with a free estimate and a written price first.
DIY or Call Us?
You can do the diagnosis. Stand near the track, watch each roller as the door goes up and down. If one is not spinning, or spinning while wobbling, you have found the problem. You can also check for play by grabbing the roller stem where it meets the hinge, with the door closed, and giving it a wiggle. Loose means worn.
What you should not do is remove the bottom roller on your own. The bottom roller is under tension from the lift cable. Unbolting the bottom bracket without releasing tension the right way can send the cable whipping, and that cable can do real damage to hands and faces. We say that not to scare you, but because we have repaired enough DIY attempts in San Francisco garages to know how often it goes wrong. If you want it done safely and you want it done once, call (650) 550-9734. We’ll send a technician who tells you exactly what the job costs before a single bolt comes out.
FAQs
Openly and honestly: 7 to 12 years for steel rollers, 10 to 15 for sealed-bearing nylon, depending on cycles and moisture. In San Francisco, the damp air and salt fog near the ocean cut into that lifespan. Garages within a few blocks of Ocean Beach or the bay see more corrosion on metal parts than inland neighborhoods do. If your door opens 4 or more times a day and you still have original rollers from a 2010 install, you are on borrowed time.
No. A worn roller has worn bearings or a worn stem, and there is nothing inside a $12 roller worth rebuilding. Once it grinds or wobbles, the fix is replacement. The good news is that replacement is fast and affordable. Call (650) 550-9734 for an exact quote, and we’ll give it to you in writing before we start.
Thirty to sixty minutes for all rollers on most doors. Single-car doors are faster, double-car doors take a little longer. We replace all rollers in one visit rather than patching the worst one, and we check track alignment as part of the job at no extra charge.
Yes. Our trucks carry sealed-bearing nylon rollers in both stem sizes Clopay uses, plus steel rollers for older doors that still need them. We also stock replacement parts for LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie openers. If you want Clopay-branded OEM rollers specifically, we order those and install them on the return visit.
